I have given the navigation options some more thought and think we should add Contents and Index links above the search box, which would make the complete set of shortcuts:

Books · Articles · Subjects · Authors · Contents · Index

I've also moved 'Recent changes' and 'Latest additions' (which currently does the same as the 'Recent additions' link in the top-right corner) closer to the top of the navigation section so that they are more visible, but will leave everything as is until after tomorrow unless I hear otherwise. -- KW

I agree with Index but not Contents (that is for searching not browsing). And I still really really want Recent Additions (think how the homepage of Wikipedia has a selection 'From Wikipedia's newest articles'. I just want that idea of dipping in to the content to be prominent. - TS

What I was calling 'Contents' is actually the top-level browse index, which I've now renamed accordingly. I will make some more tweaks to the navigation menu shortly. I also like the idea of having an easily accessible selection of new articles and other content but think that most useful place for this would be on the home page. I'll try to come up with a better design for this over the next few weeks and get back to you. -- KW

Journals and articles - 'articles' needs to be a link to that subcategory. - TS

I initially avoided creating an articles index because I thought its size would quickly get out of hand. The idea was that articles would be accessed through the journal and anthology pages. However, I agree that this would be useful, so perhaps we should just go ahead and cross that bridge when we come to it. I'll update the article template so that it adds items to this index automatically. Unless there are any major objections then I think we should stick with the term 'articles' rather than 'papers', although this will undoubtedly cause some confusion amongst our American friends. :-) -- Keith Wilson 09:05, 8 September 2006 (UTC)

Top right navigation: do we need 'Books' and 'Journals', which are subcategories? Why not just 'Works/People/Organisations/Subjects'? Or better 'Topics/Works/People/Organisations'? - TS

Just to clarify a few points on the navigation options and index pages:
  1. The top-right navigation options are intended to be the ones that people will use the most in locating content, rather than the top level categories per se. They also provide a brief overview of the types of content that can be found on the site. In other words, they are provided as shortcuts rather than a top-level index, which can be found on the browse / table of contents page.
  2. I think that the articles index, if we have one, should also be added to this list. Perhaps we could replace Books and Journals with Publications, which contains these as subcategories, to save space?
  3. Works includes published works sorted by author name including articles but excluding journals, whilst Publications is indexed by publisher, and excludes articles as well as things like lectures, which I cut from the original version due to time constraints. (We can always add these back in at a later date along with conferences and other types of events.) Both index pages list the relevant works or publications in alphabetical order at the bottom of the page.
  4. Topics or Subjects? I keep changing my mind on this one. I started out with Topics, but this seemed a bit too general and might encourage people to include specific questions rather than general subject areas, which was more the original intention (although we'll probably need to add a question-based index at some point too).
